Over the past 25 years, we have completed many projects at Shelburne Farms. Through this process, we have become intimately familiar with the buildings there and frequently offer guidance and master planning for the Farm. Most recently, we completed a renovation and modernization project at the Coach Barn. This Landmark 1902 building, designed by Robert H. Robertson, was originally built to house the family horses and carriages. The building now functions as the home to the Shelburne Farms Institute for Sustainable Schools, hosting educators, community meetings, workshops, and non-profit events. The goal of this project was to modernize the interior spaces, add geothermal heating and cooling, add new lighting, and add a commercial teaching kitchen to support its change in use. We carefully documented the building and sought to make improvements while maintaining and preserving the essential historic character of this National Historic Landmark. We take pride in introducing new life, purpose, and relevance into historic buildings; preserving their character while thoughtfully adapting them for a new chapter.
The Coach Barn received a Preservation Trust award from the Preservation Trust of Vermont.
