Originally built in 1956, the 4-story, first year residence hall on the Middlebury College Campus underwent a comprehensive renovation. The project scope included building envelope improvements with new windows, exterior wall and roof insulation, elevator, new interior finishes, lighting and mechanical and electrical upgrades. The building is now fully heated and cooled with a new geothermal system, the first building on campus to fully embrace this type of system, replacing its reliance on the college’s district steam system.
The project also included new private, gender-neutral bathrooms on all floors, a refresh of all dorm rooms and student lounges and an addition of a porch on the east side of the building. The existing grades at the porch were re-worked allowing for universal access to the terrace and the east campus entrance.
The work done at Stewart Hall is part of a series of building renovations planned at the College, seeking to maximize energy efficiency and reduce campus carbon emissions, promoting the College’s Energy 2028 initiative.
